Message from Chairwoman, District 1,
County of San Diego, Nora Vargas
Dear Bonita Community Member,
As Chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors, and your representative, I want you to know I have heard you and I am aware about the challenges we face every day as it relates to our unsheltered community in “the jungle”. At my request, the County of San Diego has been leading the efforts to work closely with Caltrans, the City of Chula Vista, and National City to address the encampment along Plaza Bonita Road. Since our efforts started, we have coordinated outreach and have provided services such as enrollment into self-sufficiency programs, hygiene kits and connection to housing.
In our partnership with Governor Newsom, I have been able to secure $5.1M in grant funding to address the encampment known as “the jungle”. The allocation will bolster outreach efforts, support encampment abatement, and most importantly permanently house our unsheltered neighbors living in this area. I am looking forward to working with state and local jurisdictions to once and for all address the unsheltered population in “the jungle”.
I will keep you posted on next steps but wanted to make sure that I let you know that we are taking the first step in that this is the first step in the right direction. Should you have any questions, feel free to reach my personal cell phone (619)339-3634.
Sincerely,
Nora Vargas
Chairwoman, District 1
County of San Diego
